Constable (Lord High)

Definition:
"chief officer of the household, court, administration, or military forces of a ruler" (OED n 1)
As "Constable of France", "commander-in-chief of the army in the absence of the monarch; he was the supreme judge of military offences and of questions of chivalry, and had the regulation of all matters connected with tilts, tournaments, trials by combat," (OED n 2a)
The Constable of England had similar functions (OED n 2b)
